Gus Smith is a dynamic artist and musician based in Portland, OR, whose eclectic work spans various media, subjects, and styles. Deeply influenced by comic books, cartoons, roots music, and street art, his creations are a vibrant blend of pop culture, subculture, and folk traditions.

Gus earned his BFA in painting from the Maine College of Art and Design in 2000. Shortly after, he moved to Bellingham, WA, where he was inspired by a thriving D.I.Y. creative community to start performing and recording his music. Over the years, he has enchanted audiences across the Pacific Northwest with his distinctive American folk music, forming several bands and self-releasing albums.

In addition to his musical endeavors, Gus has maintained a prolific output in visual arts, experimenting with a wide range of media while also working as a cook. In 2009, he and his partner took ownership of Common Grounds Coffeehouse in Portland’s Hawthorne District, becoming beloved fixtures in the local community for over a decade.

Today, Gus has shifted his focus to commercial digital illustration and design. He resides in Portland’s Cully neighborhood with his family and their dog, Lula, continuing to explore and expand his creative horizons.
